Travel vaccines for South America
For most of South America, UK guidance advises hepatitis A and an up-to-date tetanus booster, with typhoid for many trips. Yellow fever vaccine is recommended for large areas of Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia and northern Argentina, especially the Amazon basin. Rabies and hepatitis B suit some travellers, and the Amazon carries malaria risk.
Vaccines at a glance
- Most travellers: hepatitis A and the diphtheria, tetanus and polio booster, with typhoid for many trips.
- Depending on the area: yellow fever, rabies and hepatitis B.
Yellow fever and malaria
Yellow fever risk covers much of the Amazon basin and parts of the surrounding countries, and some countries check certificates. Malaria is mostly found in the Amazon region; coastal cities and the high Andes carry little or no risk. See the yellow fever guide and malaria tablets and advice.
Altitude in the Andes
Cusco sits at about 3,400 metres and La Paz at about 3,600 metres, high enough for altitude sickness. Ascend gradually, rest on arrival and drink plenty of water. Acetazolamide (Diamox) can be prescribed after a consultation to help prevent symptoms.
